VTM Presents Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans for 5 Municipalities in Viseu Dão Lafões

Between 8 and 10 September, the municipalities of Carregal do Sal, Nelas, Penalva do Castelo, Santa Comba Dão and São Pedro do Sul hosted public presentation sessions for their respective Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMPs), which VTM is developing in collaboration with CIM Viseu Dão Lafões and the five municipalities. These sessions represented an important milestone in a shared effort to improve mobility across the region, while ensuring that each Plan responds to the specific characteristics and needs of its territory.

During the sessions, VTM presented the work carried out throughout the three main stages of the Plans: Characterisation and Diagnosis, Sustainable Mobility Strategy and Action Plan. Starting from a detailed assessment of current mobility conditions and travel patterns, each SUMP defines a long-term vision and a set of measures aimed at promoting safer, more accessible, efficient and sustainable mobility. The proposals cover areas such as public transport, walking and cycling, road safety, parking, shared and electric mobility, universal accessibility and the management of public space.

The Plans are intended to provide the municipalities with practical frameworks for guiding mobility policies and investments over the coming years. At the same time, they are designed as dynamic planning instruments, capable of responding to emerging needs and supporting future funding and implementation opportunities.

Beyond presenting the technical work developed, the sessions also provided an important opportunity for public participation. Local representatives, stakeholders and residents were invited to share their views on the proposed measures and highlight concerns and priorities arising from their daily experience of mobility in each municipality. The contributions collected during these sessions will be considered in the next stages of the process.

In parallel with these five municipal Plans, VTM is also developing the Intermunicipal Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan for CIM Viseu Dão Lafões. This Plan will provide a strategic umbrella for mobility across the region, aligning municipal action with challenges that require coordination beyond administrative boundaries The implementation of the five municipal SUMPs will therefore contribute directly to the wider intermunicipal strategy, while the Intermunicipal SUMP will help strengthen cooperation and connectivity across the region. Its public presentation will take place at a later stage of the project.
